Time-to-hire benchmarks for senior engineering roles
Founders usually ask “how long will this take” and hear either an optimistic promise or a shrug. The honest answer is that senior engineering searches have a natural shape, and most delays are self-inflicted rather than market-imposed.
The healthy shape of a search
A well-run senior search breaks into phases: scoping and JD work measured in days, sourcing and screening measured in a few weeks, interviews measured in two to three weeks if the calendar is managed, and offer to signature inside a week. Stack those and a disciplined search lands in the six-to-ten-week range. Leadership and truly scarce specialties run longer; well-defined mid-senior roles can run shorter.
Where timelines actually die
Almost never in sourcing. The graveyard is the middle: interview scheduling that drips across weeks because panels were not pre-booked, debriefs that happen days after the interview, and decision meetings that wait for a stakeholder’s return from holiday. Each gap looks small; together they double the calendar. Candidates read the slowness as indecision, and the best ones exit the process without telling you.
Fast is not the same as rushed
Cutting rounds you actually need is rushing. Removing dead air between rounds you do need is speed. The distinction matters because thoroughness and pace are not in tension: a compressed calendar with structured rounds and real screening beats a leisurely one on both quality and close rate. Benchmark yourself honestly
