Why screening should be included in a search, not sold as an add-on
Read enough agency proposals and you will notice a pattern in the fine print: candidate assessment, psychometrics, or “enhanced screening” offered as a paid add-on. It looks like flexibility. It is actually a statement about what the agency believes it is selling.
Pricing reveals the product
An agency that prices screening separately has defined its core product as introductions: resumes delivered, interviews arranged, fee collected. Everything that makes a hire durable, measured fit, working-style assessment, culture mapping, sits outside the definition, available for a surcharge. The incentive follows the pricing: the add-on gets sold, not used.
Screening is the work, not a feature
A search that ends in a hire who leaves within a year did not save you money on the assessment line item. Skills get candidates through interviews; fit decides whether they stay and compound. Treating fit assessment as optional is like a structural engineer offering load calculations as a premium tier. We include psychometric testing and culture mapping in every search, at no extra cost, because a shortlist without measured fit is half a shortlist.
What included screening should look like
Included does not mean gestured at. Ask any agency, including us, three questions. What instrument do you use and what does it measure? How do results shape the shortlist rather than decorate it? Do you map the candidate against our team’s actual working culture, or against a generic profile? Real answers name the assessment, show a sample output, and explain at least one candidate who was screened out because of it.
The buyer’s rule of thumb
When comparing proposals, move every assessment add-on into the base price and recompare. Some cheap fees stop being cheap. Then weigh what each agency’s retention numbers say about whether their screening, wherever it is priced, actually works.
